HOMEWORK STRUGGLES?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WHY DID HE KNOW HOW TO DO IT AT SCHOOL BUT \u2018CAN\u2019T REMEMBER\u2019 NOW??<\/p>\n<p>You know the scenario\u2026.. you have just spent the past 20 minutes following the agreed upon \u2019homework schedule.\u2019<br \/>\nA favourite snack has been eaten \u2026..<br \/>\nThe timer indicating it is \u2018time to start\u2019 has just beeped.<\/p>\n<p>MULTISTEP PROBLEM \u2026.<br \/>\n\u2018WHAT DO I DO NEXT\u2019??<\/p>\n<p>You have checked the agenda and have that sinking feeling\u2026..<br \/>\nEven though there is a very positive note from the teacher saying class went well\u2026.<br \/>\nToday\u2019s homework is a math worksheet\u2026.<br \/>\nIt doesn\u2019t take long until the tears of frustration begin (for both you and your child)\u2026\u2026<br \/>\nWhile in class he seemed to understand the steps required to complete the work \u2026 but now\u2026<br \/>\n\u2018I don\u2019t know\u2019 or \u2018I forget\u2019 are the answers you keep hearing and are beginning to feel like he just wants you to do the work for him\u2026..<br \/>\nBUT\u2026. He really truly do not remember how to do it and believe me\u2026.<br \/>\nAs frustrated as you are\u2026.. he is more frustrated!  Not to mention the feelings of being incompetent and dumb.<\/p>\n<p>WORKING MEMORY<br \/>\nYou have heard the term working memory many times \u2026.. how does it impact your son\/daughter\u2019s experience at school?<br \/>\nIn a word \u2026.. HUGELY!<br \/>\nWorking memory is involved in so many areas of life in general, not to mention it\u2019s requirements for a successful school experience.<\/p>\n<p>Working memory is the combination of remembering (or storing) information, while manipulating (or using) that same information.<\/p>\n<p>HOW CAN I HELP HIM, WITHOUT DOING THE WORK OR GETTING INTO MAJOR BATTLES??<\/p>\n<p>In order to compensate for a weak working memory, it is imperative that there are strategies and accommodations in place BEFORE that all too familiar battle over whether or not he\/she can actually remember how to complete the math problems.<br \/>\nEnsuring that homework assignments and expectations are provided in writing is imperative\u2026.<br \/>\nDepending on your child\u2019s specific learning style, there are other accommodations that should be (but often are not) included on their IEP.<\/p>\n<p>An important service that I offer my clients is a full review of current IEPs and the supporting assessments so that I can suggest accommodations that might be of significant help but are not on the IEP.<\/p>\n<p>For more information\u2026.
