HAVING A CHILD WITH ADHD DOES NOT MAKE YOU A BAD PARENT!!

ADHD is a wiring issue …. NOT a ‘try harder’ issue

I can’t tell you how many clients have told me about the negative comments that they receive from every direction – family and friends, teachers and extracurricular instructors and even the clerk at the grocery store has an opinion about what you should be doing!

BAD PARENT….. I DOUBT IT!!

TIRED PARENT…. More than likely!

A PARENT WHO IS TRYING TO WADE THROUGH THE BUREAUCRACY OF A SCHOOL BOARD…. Count on it!

AN ADVOCATE ….. OR LEARNING TO BE ONE…… it’s never too late to start!

Are you tired of…..

The judgements from people who have NO idea what you have tried or the strategies that you have in place to help your child be successful

The negative comments from teachers….DAILY…. surely there must be something good to say. Why can’t they tell you about those things once in a while??

The constant battle to advocate for your child….. Accommodations in an IEP do NOT give your child an unfair advantage nor are they optional!

Opinions about whether or not you are doing the right thing by choosing to medicate (or not medicate).

Being a parent is probably one of the most difficult jobs there is …. After all, your kid didn’t arrive with a manual and everyone from doctors to friends and family and strangers at the park seem to have a way to get your kid to shape up. …. They just aren’t getting the proper discipline at home….

Then …. Add ADHD (and quite possibly another learning disability, anxiety, OCD …. )

REALLY…. How is a parent supposed to get answers and feel competent??

MY ADVICE….. Get as much information as you can and go with what you know in your heart is best for your child. You might not be an expert on ADHD

YOU ARE, however, an expert about YOUR child.

DON’T believe everything people are saying and DO have confidence in yourself!!

REMEMBER….. although everybody makes mistakes…… there aren’t many parents who intentionally do something to hinder their child’s potential for being the best that they can be

WE DO THE BEST THAT WE CAN WITH THE RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO US IN THAT MOMENT

So…. Until those judgemental and highly critical people who ‘are just trying to help’ have actually walked a day in your shoes…..

Remember……they really don’t know that they could do any better than you are!
